Poetry Lesson

Page history last edited by Eric Wheeler 8 years, 6 months ago

Poetry is short texts worth exploring.

My favorite way to discuss poetry with students is to use Sheridan Blau's directions.  He used these directions with a set of poems on a single piece of paper when I attended his session at CATE in Monterey in 1999.

I like to select poems that speak to each other, poems that help students form opinions and find things to say about the poems.  Here is a selection of poems about war:

A great source for poetry in the Public Domain is Bartleby's Verse Site.

Often I use forms to help students discuss and compare poems.  These forms are adapted from ones that have been shared at College Board AP Workshops and CATE conferences:

A great text for helping teachers explore many strategies for teaching poetry and teaching a poet is Carol Jago's Nikki Giovanni in the Classroom.

Enjoy Poetry!  Your students will, too!
